Name: Bang Yongguk Nickname: Bbang Band/Solo: B.A.P. Journal: ![]() AIM: # viva.la.revolucion Twitter: @beatsbybbang Age: 24 (3/31/1992) Occupation: Bartender by night, works on music, film, and carpentry projects by day. Biography: Born a full twelve hours after his twin brother Yongnam, and six and a half years after their sister Natasha, Bang Yongguk was born in Incheon, his mother rushed their despite needing to get on a flight back to the States after an extended visit for the lunar new year. They were premature, and the extended stay was expensive, but her family could at least visit her while her husband returned to work in California. The twins, once healthy, couldn't have been more different- Yongnam was a chatterbox even before forming words, while Yongguk was quiet even if he needed something. It didn't change once they returned to Los Angeles, to a home that was just large enough for five plus one dog. While his family thought that Yongguk might have a learning disability, it was more simply that he didn't want to speak. He uttered his first word when he was five, and while the way he slurred things together would never go away, he'd never forget speaking out to stand up for his childhood friend in the face of the school bullies. He and she were the best of friends, read comics and manhwa together, built model kits and wrote notes back and forth despite sitting together every lunch period. But nothing lasts, and she moved away before he knew it. They kept in touch, becoming pen pals, with her insisting on handwritten letters even in the growing digital age. Yongguk's interests had always been varied, but the way he spoke with an accent even in English, and his relatively small stature and thick glasses didn't help matters at all. Despite being good with his hands, his label as a nerd wouldn't leave for a long time. He picked up boxing at his sister's recommendation, and it helped somewhat, though he still got shoved into lockers. Before starting high school, he managed to meet up with his pen pal again, the happiest either of them had been in ages. The visit didn't last nearly long enough, and they went their separate ways again. In addition to the letters they wrote, he started to pen poems and lyrics, as well. All of his different interests had kept him occupied enough that the news of his parent's divorce took him by surprise. His siblings remained in California, and Yongguk went with his mother to live in Seoul, looked down on from the very start of his high school career. He graduated near the top of his class regardless, took a few years off to visit Spain and Cuba, to learn the language and learn things about the world. When he decided to attend college and major in carpentry, a skill and interest he'd picked up over his travels, he chose to attend a small school in Rhode Island, close enough to New York City to visit during extended time off, but not close enough for him to do anything with the music he liked to make in his spare time. He went two years without seeing his family at all, collecting tattoos and notches on his bedpost, and enough was enough. He applied to transfer to a few schools in Seoul, and visited his father and siblings over winter break while things were finalized. The start of the spring semester brought him to Seoul, where his pen pal was also currently in residence, though he didn't know quite yet how to break the news. He got comfortable on campus, spoke to club representatives and got a part time job at a bar close to his campus while temporarily living in a hostel. He found an apartment of his own, as his mother lived in Gwangju with her family. He made a point to visit her over Seollal, promised he would do his best to make her proud; he could only hope to live up to his word. At the start of November, his mother's declining health spurred his decision to make a temporary move to Gwangju and help look after her. She passed just before the end of 2016, and while Yongguk is still grieving and will be for a long while to come, he's never been one to sit still. He arrived back in Seoul on the 10th of January, 2017, and threw himself headfirst back into his job. |
